White label SEO vs in-house: cost, benefits and growth.

What it really costs to hire an SEO, what white label SEO costs, and how a white label partner lets your agency sell more services without adding payroll.

Key takeaways

  • A full-time US SEO specialist costs roughly $81,000 to $118,000 a year once salary, benefits and tools are included.
  • White label SEO costs $1,000 to $2,500 per client per month with my plans, and agencies usually resell it at 1.5x to 2x.
  • With white label, the agency earns a margin from the first client. With a hire, it needs about three clients just to cover the salary.
  • The bigger benefit is expansion: new service lines, larger accounts and more clients without new payroll.

The four ways an agency can deliver SEO

When a client asks for SEO, an agency has four realistic options:

  1. Hire in-house. A full-time SEO specialist on payroll.
  2. Use freelancers. Individual contractors from marketplaces, hired project by project.
  3. Offshore white label. A provider in a distant time zone, usually Asia, that delivers under your brand.
  4. Nearshore white label. A provider in Latin America that works in US hours and delivers under your brand.

Each one can work. The right choice depends on how many SEO clients you have today, how many you expect next year, and how much time you want to spend managing people instead of selling.

What an in-house SEO really costs

Salary is only part of the cost. Built In reports an average base salary of $55,503 for SEO specialists in the US in 2026, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median for market research analysts and marketing specialists at $78,760 (May 2025). On top of that, benefits represent about 30% of total compensation for private industry workers, according to the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation.

Cost item (per year)Lower rangeUpper range
Base salary$55,503$78,760
Benefits and payroll costs (30% of total compensation)$23,787$33,754
SEO tools (Semrush or Ahrefs, crawler, rank tracking)*$2,000$6,000
Total per year$81,290$118,514
Total per month$6,774$9,876

*Tool costs are my estimate for a typical agency stack. Recruiting fees, onboarding time and management hours are not included, so the real cost is usually higher.

There are also hidden costs. Hiring a good SEO takes weeks or months, a new hire needs time to learn your processes, and one specialist rarely covers everything: technical SEO, local SEO, content, AI search and web development are different skills. If that person leaves, your clients' work stops with them.

What white label SEO costs

White label providers charge a wholesale price per client. Benchmarks published by Nico Digital in June 2026 show these typical monthly wholesale ranges:

TierOffshoreOnshore (US)Typical retail
Local SEO$300 to $900$900 to $2,200$900 to $2,500
Mid-market SEO$900 to $2,500$2,500 to $6,000$2,000 to $6,000
E-commerce and enterprise$2,500 to $6,000+$6,000 to $15,000+$6,000 to $15,000+

The same report finds agency gross margins on SEO retainers between 45% and 65%, with a median near 55%, and retail prices around 2x to 3x wholesale. My own white label plans sit between offshore and onshore: $1,000, $1,750 and $2,500 per client per month, with senior work done in US business hours.

Break-even: when does hiring make sense?

Suppose your agency sells SEO at $3,500 per client per month, a common retail price for a mid-market retainer.

  • With an in-house hire costing about $8,300 per month (the middle of the range above), you need roughly three clients just to cover the cost. Profit starts from the third client, and one specialist can usually handle only 6 to 10 accounts well.
  • With white label on my Growth plan ($1,750), you keep $1,750 per client from day one, a 50% gross margin, and there is no fixed cost if a client leaves.

Hiring makes sense when you have a steady base of a dozen or more SEO clients, a senior person to lead the team and processes already in place. Before that point, white label is usually cheaper, faster and less risky. Many agencies combine both: a small in-house team for strategy and client contact, and a white label partner for execution.

Benefits of white label beyond cost

  • Senior skills on demand. Technical SEO, local SEO, AEO/GEO, content and web development, without hiring five people.
  • Speed. Start a new client next week instead of after a hiring process.
  • Flexible capacity. Add or pause clients month to month.
  • Your brand stays in front. Reports and deliverables carry your logo, and the partner never contacts your clients.
  • Focus. Your team spends time on sales and relationships, where an agency makes its money.

How white label SEO helps your agency expand

Cost savings are the obvious benefit. Growth is the bigger one. A white label partner turns SEO into capacity you can sell immediately, which opens five expansion paths:

1. Sell SEO to the clients you already have

A web design or ads agency with 40 active clients that converts just 15% of them to a monthly SEO plan adds 6 retainers. At $3,500 per month each, that is $21,000 in new monthly revenue and about $10,500 in gross profit on the Growth plan, without a single new hire.

2. Add new service lines

Local SEO and Google Business Profile management, AEO/GEO for AI search, e-commerce SEO, content and SEO-ready websites can all be added to your menu. Each new service raises the average revenue per client and makes clients less likely to leave, because more of their marketing depends on you.

3. Win bigger and more technical accounts

Many agencies lose pitches for e-commerce, multi-location or enterprise clients because nobody on the team can speak confidently about migrations, faceted navigation or schema. A senior white label partner can prepare the audit and join the call as part of your team.

4. Enter new verticals and bilingual markets

With a partner who already knows automotive, e-commerce, healthcare and local services, you can target those industries without learning them from scratch. A bilingual partner also lets you serve clients who want to reach Spanish-speaking customers in the US.

5. Build recurring revenue

SEO is a monthly retainer. Every client you add increases predictable monthly revenue, which makes the agency easier to plan, finance and, one day, sell.

An illustrative 12-month scenario

MonthSEO clientsMonthly revenue (at $3,500)Monthly gross profit (Growth plan)
1 (pilot)1$3,500$1,750
33$10,500$5,250
66$21,000$10,500
1210$35,000$17,500

Illustrative example, not a forecast. Results depend on your sales, pricing and client mix. At 10 clients, the same revenue with in-house staff would usually need two specialists and a manager.

Risks of white label and how to manage them

  • Quality. Start with one pilot client and judge the work before adding more.
  • Confidentiality. Sign a mutual NDA and a non-solicitation clause before sharing access.
  • Communication. Choose a partner in your time zone, with a clear response time.
  • Dependency. Make sure all work is documented and owned by your agency, so you can switch if needed.
  • Tactics. Ask how links are built and how AI content is reviewed. Google warns against providers who guarantee rankings; see Do you need an SEO?

How to choose a white label SEO partner

  1. Published pricing and simple terms, without long lock-ins.
  2. A named, senior person doing the work, with verifiable experience.
  3. Sample reports you can rebrand.
  4. Overlap with your working hours.
  5. Written commitments on confidentiality, ownership and non-solicitation.
  6. A pilot option before a long-term plan.

These are exactly the commitments I work with. If you want to test the model, start with one pilot client.

Frequently asked questions

Is white label SEO cheaper than hiring in-house?

For most agencies with fewer than a dozen SEO clients, yes. A US SEO specialist costs about $81,000 to $118,000 a year with benefits and tools, while white label costs $1,000 to $2,500 per client per month with no fixed cost.

How much margin do agencies make on white label SEO?

Industry benchmarks put agency gross margins on SEO retainers between 45% and 65%, with a median near 55%. Reselling at 2x the wholesale price gives a 50% gross margin.

When should an agency hire an in-house SEO?

When it has a stable base of a dozen or more SEO clients, a senior person to lead, and established processes. Many agencies then keep a white label partner for overflow and specialized work.

Can I combine an in-house team with white label SEO?

Yes. A common model is in-house strategy and client management, with a white label partner handling technical work, content and local SEO.

How fast can a white label partner start?

Usually within a week: a call, an NDA, access to the client's accounts and a pilot audit.
